Canberra Airport Terminal
Post Date: June 04 2017

Between 2009 - 2014 the Canberra Airport Terminal began a $500 million redevelopment of its terminal precinct.

The old terminal was demolished and a new 55,000m2 concourse was constructed in its place. The goal was to deliver a much larger terminal which was the best of its kind and the most carbon friendly in Australia.

The development trippled the terminal check-in counters to 44, quadrupled its baggage handling system, added 10 new aerobridges, expanded its security screening area - including international customs requirements, increased the amount of new food and beverage outlets and added over 7,000m2 of lounge area.

In order to stay on top of its energy demands, two central energy tri-generation systems were installed to provide electricity, heating, chilled and condenser water to the terminal and surrounding structures.

The air-conditioning of the terminal is supplied by four electric and two absorption chillers, six boilers and distributed via a low temperature air system comprising of over 71 AHUs and 223 VAVs.

The Delta solution
The management team of the Canberra Airport is committed to driving energy efficient and sustainability practices. As a result of this commitment they've created an Energy Management Reduction Task Force, comprised of Delta Building Automation and CopperTree Analytics, to help drive energy efficiencies.

Using enteliWEB and Kaizen analytics software, Delta Building Automation monitors the daily energy usage and HVAC operation across the airport terminal—ensuring it's constantly operating at peak efficiency. enteliWEB and Kaizen form the basis of our Data Driven Maintenance (DDM). DDM enables us to gain insights that help us proactively prioritise and focus on issues and faults that need to be fixed. The entire process drives down maintenance costs by allowing our on-site technicians to focus on immediate issues.

In 2015, the Canberra Airport won the Australian Airports Association Industry Award for Airport Innovation and Excellence in Environmental Management. A testimony to the groundbreaking energy services that Delta Building Automation provides every day.

"We have been using Delta's energy management and maintenance services for over 10 years.

Delta have helped reduce the terminal's total energy consumption by over 200,000 kWh.

We highly recommend them."
